Dan Walker has hit back at rumours about his shock BBC Breakfast exit

Strictly Come Dancing favourite Dan Walker has hit back at rumours about his BBC Breakfast departure in a lengthy social media post and statement.

The TV presenter has dismissed press reports about his departure from the BBC that cite unnamed “sources” and “moles”, in a post that he uploaded to Instagram.

Posting a snap of a sunset to symbolise the end of his BBC stint and the start of something new, Dan penned: "It is often the case that the simple truth is much duller than all the made-up ‘moles’ and so-called ‘sources’ claim."

He added: "In a nutshell… a bloke with a really good job, which he loved, got offered a really good job somewhere else which provided an amazing new challenge and the opportunity to make some exciting telly.

"The bloke explained to his current employers that, even though it was a tough decision, he had decided to leave. They are now trying their best to allow him to make a dignified departure."

Dan then concluded his caption with: "Have a lovely Monday. I’m off to have some toast."

Fans of the BBC Breakfast favourite were quick to comment below his post, with many leaving sweet messages.

One person penned: "It's just you have been part of our day for a long time now... often made us laugh when things were not so good. All the very best of luck is wished to you.. you have been a wonderful role model and we admire you very much.. a sincere thank you."

Another added: "So pleased for you Dan a genuine nice guy and a true gentleman. Best wishes on your new venture."

"We will see you on channel 5 Dan - great that you’ve gone for it! One life, live it!! All the very best in all that you do - you’re already a national treasure Sir Dan," wrote a third.

While a fourth said: "Remember Dan, those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind! Think your move is brilliant and can't wait to see you face and accomplish new challenges."

And a fifth commented: "I think it's wonderful that you have such an opportunity Dan, give it all you've got."

Last week it was announced that Dan would be leaving BBC Breakfast to go to rival station Channel 5.

The presenter joins other well-known BBC faces leaving.

Dan replaced the trusty Breakfast presenting of Bill Turnbull and will now step into the shoes of Sian Willams on Channel 5, who is leaving her own position.

When he announced his move, he said that leaving BBC Breakfast was a "massive decision", adding: "I don't think opportunities like this come around very often."

Details of his new salary have not been disclosed.

Walker’s new remit will see him presenting recently relaunched flagship news bulletin 5 News, as well as “fronting a range of new programming on the channel”, Channel 5 said.
