Dan Walker breaks silence on BBC Breakfast as he says he's not 'motivated by money'

Dan Walker is set to leave BBC Breakfast.

Yesterday, Dan announced that he would be leaving the BBC after 13 years to join Channel 5. Appearing on the breakfast show today, he broke his silence on his latest career move as he said it has been "a really difficult decision".

Dan sat next to his friend and co-host Sally Nugent, who became emotional when talking about him leaving. However, he claimed that he has "never ever been motivated by money in any job" and he was changing roles due to a "fantastic opportunity."

Sally became emotional as said to Dan: "We've been friends for 20 years, we worked together for six months, and you're off!" He replied: "Yes. But as you know - as I explained to you before all the news came out - this has been a really difficult decision for me."

He added: "Probably the hardest decision I've had to make in my career. Because I love you to bits and I love working with you." Sally emotionally replied: "I love you too, Daniel."

Dan continued as he said: "And I love the team at BBC Breakfast. These six years I've had on this sofa have been the best six years of my career by some distance. But I think sometimes opportunities come by and you have to grab them, don't you?"

He explained how the move isn't money driven as he added: "I've never ever been motivated by money in any job that I've ever taken and even though I love BBC Breakfast and everybody that works on the show, it's a fantastic opportunity to work with a brilliant team at Channel 5. And also, go an make some other programmes outside of here."

Dan has anchored the morning show since 2016 - and has been with the BBC since 2009 when he took over as presenter of Football Focus. When he announced the move the Channel 5, he said: " Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don't think opportunities like this come around very often and I can't wait."
