This week, Dan Patrick announced his eventual retirement plans, saying on his radio show that he plans to work four more years until calling it quits.
“This is a young man’s game,” Patrick said on Wednesday. “I’m the oldest guy doing this. And I enjoy doing it, but by the end of 2027, that’ll be it. You have my word, so plan accordingly.”
However, in the midst of the announcement, Patrick failed to clarify one major piece of information. On Thursday, Patrick explained that the reason why he is planning for retirement so far in advance is that he signed a contract extension to continue his radio show.
“I got phone calls yesterday, I got text messages,” Patrick said. “My wife said, ‘Are you retiring?’ I go, ‘In four and a half years!’ She goes, ‘Well, why would you announce that?’ I said, ‘I was announcing a contract extension!’ I signed a new contract with iHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio and Peacock.”

Patrick explained that he wanted to make it clear that this is his last extension, which is why he stressed retirement in his announcement. However, by doing so the public focused too much on the retirement aspect and not enough on the four years part.
“This is the last contract that I’m going to sign,” Patrick said. “And therefore the retirement tour officially starts.”
