Dan Burn's response to 'tough question' on 'expectations' at Newcastle United

Dan Burn believes Newcastle United will have enjoyed a 'very good season' if they finish in the top-half of the Premier League table. The former Brighton defender would also like to see Eddie Howe's side push for an 'outside chance' of European football next season.

Expectations on Tyneside have been the topic of discussion in recent weeks as a result of the Magpies' stunning end to last season. Eddie Howe's side finished the campaign in fine fashion, pulling comfortably clear of relegation danger following a January transfer spend in excess of £90 million.

Further investment this summer which has seen the blockbuster arrivals of Sven Botman and Alexander Isak has led supporters to question what Newcastle could achieve in the current campaign. Howe's side have impressed with their performances, but are also yet to win in the Premier League since the opening-day success over Nottingham Forest.

Burn was asked about the expectations surrounding St James' Park this season. He told the BBC's The Monday Night Club: "I think that's a tough question to answer isn't it?

"I think whatever you say, there's going to be loads of different opinions on it. I've heard people saying that we should be aiming for Europe, I've heard people saying that we should be top ten.

"On a personal note and seeing where we are, I think we can't get too far ahead of ourselves sometimes. I think as a fan of Newcastle, I do think that happens where we sort of get too far ahead of ourselves sometimes and think we're going to win the league next season.

"I do think it's going to take longer than that. We've taken a different approach to it than Man City have, where Man City went we're going to have to spend however much money to catch up really quickly.

"The restrictions we have in place with Financial Fair Play means we're going about it a different way. I do think that if we finish top ten comfortably with an outside chance of getting Europe, I think that's a very good season."
