Dan Burn reveals Newcastle United dressing room 'frustration' at 'lazy' Jurgen Klopp comments

Dan Burn believes that his Newcastle team has been done a disservice by Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool manager made a jibe about the Magpies having 'no ceiling'.

Newcastle started the day fourth in the Premier League after being rejuvenated under the management of Eddie Howe. But after the club's director of football Dan Ashworth suggested the Magpies have "no ceiling" due to the wealth of their Saudi owners, Reds boss Klopp made a sarcastic quip about Ashworth's idle boast.

Klopp said: "I heard now that at Newcastle somebody [Ashworth] said 'there is no ceiling for this club'. Yes! He is right. He is absolutely right. There is no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations, but other clubs have ceilings."

Despite Klopp's disapproval at Newcastle's vastly improved footing in English football, Magpies defender Burn feels that it detracts from the progress the current crop of players have made on the pitch under the tutelage of Howe.

Speaking to the i, Burn said: "We’ve been criticised a little bit for saying there’s no ceiling, thinking we’re just going to spend money but with the financial fair play restrictions and stuff it’s not possible. It’s not all about that, it’s about how the club has been run. I knew Dan Ashworth at Brighton and he did great work there, the way he set the club up, if he can do similar here we can really kick on and get to the top.

"We tend not to listen to a lot of what has been said, we try to keep it in-house. But when things like that (Klopp's comment) are said, it is frustrating because a lot of the lads who are performing really well were here before the takeover and I think it’s a little bit lazy when they do say that.

"I can understand where they’re coming from. At the moment people say we’re the richest club in the world and we probably will go on to spend a lot more money but if you look at the money we’ve spent so far and the lads that play week in, week out it’s probably not doing us justice."

Newcastle started Sunday eight points clear of Liverpool and can extend their advantage with a win at Southampton before the Reds face Tottenham in North London this evening.
