Dan Burn disagreement should warn Manchester United and give Newcastle hope in Carabao Cup final

Dan Burn channelled his inner Gazza when the Newcastle United defender stared down the barrel of the camera and roared he was going to get his suit measured following the Magpies' Carabao Cup semi-final win against Southampton. However, the Geordie and his team-mates won't be in their finery when they get off the team bus at Wembley on Sunday. For good reason.

Burn and Newcastle's leadership group wanted there to be as few distractions as possible ahead of the club's first cup final in nearly 24 years. That goes right down to getting fitted for a new three-piece. Clearly, Newcastle are not just going to the capital for a day out.

"That should be the mentality of everyone," Burn told ChronicleLive. "I've heard people speak to us and say, 'It's just good to get to the final' but I don't agree. It is good to get here but for a club the size of Newcastle and for how long we have gone without, we need to win and we should have that mentality that we are going there to win."

That desire is shared. Indeed, it was rather telling that Newcastle conducted their media day on Tuesday - five days before the final takes place - as Eddie Howe wanted to ensure his focus was purely on the 'football and tactical side' ahead of the game. You can see why. Newcastle, after all, are just one win away from ending the club's 54-year wait to win a trophy and the Magpies will have to get their preparation right and be at their very best to get the better of Manchester United.

While Manchester United are in ominous form, at a time when Newcastle are stuttering, it is worth bearing in mind that Howe's team have previously given the Red Devils and fellow big hitters like Man City, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea more than a match in the Premier League this season. Whatever happens on Sunday, Burn and his tracksuited team-mates will be prepared.

"I've played under managers in the past where you sort of just feel as if you're not winging it, but you're having to use your experience to get through it," he said. "Here we go through the games with key points of how we are going to affect teams.

"Everyone seems to know their job. That is not just the starting XI - that's lads who are coming on. That's a good thing that everyone who comes in knows exactly what their role is in the team and we work on it. We will work on our game plan for Manchester United on Sunday and everyone will know their jobs."

Burn certainly knows his job at left-back, all right. It may not be Burn's natural position, but the defender has been an ever-present under Howe for a reason.

Not only has Burn played his part in Newcastle having the meanest defence in the country - the 30-year-old has been a leader, too. It is Burn, for example, who has repeatedly reminded his team-mates they would be 'gods' if they could become the first side since 1969 to win a trophy for the club. So is the towering Geordie planning a big speech before the game?

"I feel as if I'm a leader of the group, but I lead more by example rather than giving out a lot of information," he said. "I will speak when I feel as if I need to speak. I will probably speak leading up to the game just to say what I feel because I feel if I say something that really means something to me, hopefully, the lads can take that."

Sunday will certainly mean a lot to Burn. If Burn was emotional in the warm-up before the semi-final second-leg win against Southampton, well, the sight of his family and friends watching on alongside 32,761 Newcastle fans at Wembley will certainly test the defender.

Yet that support has only pushed Burn and his team-mates to new heights. It was Burn who popped up with the opening goal - his first in a black-and-white shirt - in the quarter-final win against Leicester City while fellow Geordie Sean Longstaff scored twice versus Southampton. The pair are fans as well as players and that spirit will be vital at Wembley.

"It's huge," he added. "It's good to have that link - even for local kids. When I was a kid coming to watch, it was the Champions League so I was a local lad myself seeing Alan Shearer, Steve Harper, Laurent Robert, Nobby Solano and Shola Ameobi just trying to inspire the next generation. Hopefully if we can have that influence on other local lads in the area, it can only be a good thing."
