Dan Burn answers 'pressure' Newcastle Carabao Cup question and explains changing expectations

Dan Burn admits it would be 'amazing' to end Newcastle United's painful trophy drought if he had to choose between Carabao Cup success or a top-four finish. The Magpies sit third in the Premier League following a stunning start to the season, and only Southampton now stand in their way of a Wembley final.

Eddie Howe's side shrugged off their shock FA Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday to beat Leicester City three days' later in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Boyhood Magpies fan Burn scored his first goal for the club in front of the Gallowgate End, and a later strike from Joelinton sealed 2-0 win.

Newcastle return to league action with a televised encounter against Fulham on Sunday afternoon, and then face a trip to Crystal Palace before the semi-final clashes with the Saints. Burn was interviewed on talkSPORT on Friday morning, and was asked whether a trophy would trump qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Responding to Ray Parlour's question, the defender said: "Putting us under pressure there! I think for me personally and the amount of time we haven't won anything, to bring silverware to the club would be huge. We said at the start of the season we'd really like to push to win something, so if we could do that it would be amazing."

The defeat at Hillsborough was only the Newcastle's second loss of the season, and Howe's side currently hold a two-point lead over Tottenham in the top-four race. The Magpies boss has often stressed it is about taking the campaign one match at a time, rather than discussing potential European targets.

Burn declared in September that a top-half finish and an 'outside chance' of Europe would represent a successful season. Now, the 30-year-old believes the team's form to this point means a place in next year's Champions League or Europa League has to be the 'goal'.

Burn added: "I think at the start of the season, we didn't really set out any sort of targets. We just wanted to keep progressing, but obviously it's went really well this season. We're in and around those Champions League and European spots going into the second-half of the season, that's got to be our goal."
