The clash between Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez set for this weekend has been postponed. Dan Azeez injured his back during final preperations for the fight and it is unclear how long he wil be be out of action.
The South London rivals were set to square off at the O2 Arena in London’s Docklands on October 21st. The fight was meant to be the final eliminator for the WBA champion Dmitry Bivol’s title.
Both fighters were in the ring earlier this year.
Dan Azeez (20-0, 13 KOs) won the European title by defeating Thomas Faure through TKO in the 12th round in Paris in March.
Joshua Buatsi (17-0, 13 KOs) made his ring comeback in May after a year layoff from boxing. He won a a unanimous decision victory over the previously undefeated Pawel Stepian earlier this year.
“This will decide who’s number one in South London, who’s the best in the UK,” said Azeez in the build up to the fight— a question which will now remain unanswered.
Azeez has experienced an unbelievable ascent in the sport from an economics student at Essex University to a fighter now vying for a world title opportunity.
Details of the fight being rescheduled have yet to be annouced by the organizers of this match. Azeez has never had a match cancelled before and expressed frustration in a media statement regarding the annoucement.
According to Boxxer some 10,000 tickets had been sold to the event at the O2 Arena in London’s Docklands. Niether fighter had ever fought in an arena or promotion of this magnititude. The fight had been set to be broadcast by NBC Sports in the United States as well — the first such card from Boxxer boadcast on Peacock.
