Damian Lewis remembers Helen McCrory at 'perfect' poetry night dedicated to late wife

Damian Lewis has remembered his late wife Helen McCrory at a poetry reading event dedicated to the actress.

The actor said the event at the National Theatre was "perfect" due to the Peaky Blinders star's love for the venue.

During the event on Tuesday evening (January 25) a clip of Helen reading poetry was played on screen.

"This evening is dedicated to her and it’s perfect, because Helen loved the National Theatre," Damian said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

"One person whose thunder would absolutely not be stolen was Helen McCrory."

The actress, who was also known for her roles in the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises, died from cancer in April.

A "heartbroken" Damian shared at the time she had died peacefully at home and paid tribute to his "beautiful and mighty" wife in a social media post.

Damian joined Allie Esiri for the A Poet For Every Day Of The Year event alongside other special guests including Simon Russell Beale, Lesley Sharp, and Fay Ripley.

The actor, known fro his parts in Homeland, Band of Brothers, and multiple film roles, is reported to have read Derek Mahon’s 'Everything Is Going To Be All Right', before the evening’s performance concluded with a video of Helen reading Mary Oliver’s 'Wild Geese'.

Damian and Helen married in July 2007 after meeting four years earlier on stage at London's Almeida Theatre.

The couple have two teenage children, daughter Manon and son, Gulliver.

Two days after Helen's death, Damian penned an emotional tribute to her "fearlessness, wit, curiosity, talent and beauty."

He wrote: "I'm heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully as home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family."

He added: "She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you."
