Damian Casey vigil attended by large crowd as tragic Tyrone GAA star is remembered by club

The family of Tyrone GAA star Damian Casey have said they are ‘heartbroken’ following his tragic death in Spain.

Hundreds of mourners gathered for a vigil at the grounds of Damian’s home club Eoghan Ruadh in Dungannon on Sunday evening in memory of the talented hurler.

The 28-year-old tragically passed away while attending a friend's wedding in Spain, reports Belfast Live.

Damian’s father Sean, mother Susan and sisters Louise and Catherine attended the vigil, and said in a statement read by a family friend that the news of Damien’s death was the ‘worst imaginable’.

“Our family has been hit with the worst news imaginable and our hearts are broken,” the statement said.

“Words cannot express how devastating the news of Damian’s death has been.

“We thank everyone for their support we are receiving from the local community and across the country.

“We ask that everyone avoid idle speculation and that we as a family are given time and space to process what’s happened.”

Chairman of the local hurling club where Damian first fell in love with the sport, Tony Donnelly, said those in the club were the better for having known him

“I would like to pass on mine and the club’s condolences to the Casey family, Sean, Susan, Louise and Catherine,” Tony said.

“Our grief collectively doesn’t touch what they are going through at the minute.

“Damian wasn’t just a hurler with this club he was a great committee member and a hard worker.

“I think we’re all better for having known Damian.

“All I’d ask is don’t be afraid to cry, don’t be afraid to share how you’re feeling with each other and lend an ear if you feel someone needs to talk."

A touching rendition of ‘the Hurler’s Prayer’ was read out by Tyrone and Eoghan Ruadh teammate, and lifelong friend Tiernan Morgan.

Tyrone hurling captain Conor Grogan from the rival Eire Og club in Carrickmore described Damian as a ‘great hurler and an even better person’.

“He was one of the most genuine fellas that I have ever met,” Conor said.

“I hurled with Damian, both with and against and during that time I never once heard him say a bad word about anyone on his own team or any team he’s ever been involved in.

“The sheer number of people here tonight shows the esteem that Damian is held in.”
