Dalziel Rugby Club are holding their 31st annual Festival of Youth Rugby next week in memory of its late founder.
The event on Saturday, April 22, will see hundreds of supporters attending, with over 900 players from across Scotland and beyond set to compete for silverware. Travelling sides include the return of a club tour from Northern Ireland.
The day, now regarded as a premiere event in the nation’s youth sporting calendar, will once again be dedicated to the memory of the late Alan Calder.
Club spokesman Euan Duguid said: “Alan was one of these guys whose passion and enthusiasm was truly infectious. He was not only an exceptional player, but a true leader and a visionary of his time.
“He came up with an idea for a youth event and, true to his character, galvanised the whole club into action, making the first event happen in 1991.
“Back then, the tournament was contested by local teams. Today, the festival has grown on those strong Lanarkshire foundations, attracting top sides from far and wide."
Dalziel RFC stalwart Alan Calder formed a strong vision which saw the first youth rugby festival held in 1991.
He wanted to introduce youngsters to the sport, allow them to enjoy the game and include everyone, win or lose, irrespective of their ability.
Tragically, Alan passed away at the age of 58, on Monday, January 14, 2008. Since then, the festival – which now attracts teams from all over the UK - has been dedicated to his memory.
In Alan’s words, which he often repeated, 'Young players of today are the backbone of tomorrow's club rugby'.
As well as sustaining the very lifeblood of Scottish rugby, the national event is a lasting tribute to Alan's commitment, leadership and organisational abilities.
