Dalry concert to mark launch of album of traditional songs and tune

A concert in Dalry Town Hall will launch a new album of local, traditional songs and tunes.

The musicians appearing on Sunday, June 4 will be former Dalry residents Jo Miller (song and fiddle) and Amy Geddes (fiddle and viola) and Wigtownshire singer Robyn Stapleton, as well as Jo’s husband Steve Sutcliffe (concertinas) and son Neil Sutcliffe (piano, accordion and concertina).

The concert will feature older repertoire such as William Nicholson’s “Braes of Galloway” - thought to be the source of the well-known “Gallowa Hills” - along with more recent compositions such as Robbie Murray’s “Toon o Dalry”, and “Buchts o Knockreoch” by Logan Paterson of New Galloway.

Jo has been researching the music of the Glenkens since the 1980s. She said: “I’m delighted to be sharing these songs and tunes, which all have a personal association for me.

“This music has thrived in intimate environments like homes, rural schools and small halls, and the musical arrangements and performances on the album recreate that intimacy.

“The album also includes the spoken word, birdsong and singing for dancing - an aural landscape which not only evokes the former life of the Glenkens and its people, but also points toward its lively music culture in the present.”

All are welcome for this special concert, which starts at 3pm.

There will be opportunities to participate, CDs for sale, and refreshments on hand.

Tickets, costing £5/£2, are available from the CatStrand on 01644 420 374.

This event is supported by Creative Scotland.
