The injury is a devastating blow to an already tumultuous season for Dallas. Coming off an NBA Finals appearance, the franchise traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in hopes of pairing Irving with Anthony Davis to make another run in the West. Davis looked great in his team debut in February, but reaggravated an adductor strain and has not played since.
Now he's sidelined, and Irving is done for the season, greatly changing the trajectory of what's possible for the Mavericks come playoff time.
Irving had played in 50 of Dallas' 62 games this season, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. He's the only player in the NBA this season averaging at least 20 points per game, while shooting 40% or better from three and 90% or better from the free throw line.
