Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison shocked the NBA when he traded Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers. He told the media that the team had a better chance to win without Donic.
Harrison claimed that “defense wins championships” and that’s why they traded for Anthony Davis. Meanwhile, Luka Doncic helped carry the team to the NBA Finals last season. With Luka’s super-max contract no longer in the picture, the Mavericks intend to re-sign Kyrie Irving.

In 2022-23, Kyrie Irving’s relationship with the Nets hit a breaking point. Ahead of the deadline, Brooklyn traded Irving to the Mavericks. Kyrie has played in Dallas for the last two and a half seasons. He’s played and started in 117 regular season and 22 playoff games. Luka Donic had missed the Mavericks’ last 19 games due to a calf injury. That’s allowed Kyrie Irving to take full control of the offense.
Now that Doncic was traded to the Lakers, Irving will be in charge of keeping the offense moving. In 2024-25, Irving has started in 39 games for Dallas and has missed 11 due to injury. Back problems have been a lingering issue lately for the all-star guard. Kyrie is averaging (24.3) points, (4.6) rebounds, (4.8) assists, and (1.2) steals per game. This offseason, Dallas has a few ways they can re-sign Irving.
The 32-year-old has one year remaining on his four-year deal with the Mavs. If he opts into that final year, Irving could sign a four-year extension worth up to $266.7 million. Kyrie Irving could also opt out of that final year of his deal and sign a five-year deal worth as much as $313.9 million. That’s a difference of over $47 million. If Dallas gives Irving a $300+ million deal, they will look like fools for not giving that kind of money to Luka Doncic. What will their front office do?
