Dallas Cowboys sign coaches son in heartwarming NFL Draft moment

The Dallas Cowboys drafted the son of one of their scouts in a heartwarming moment caught on camera.

On day three of the NFL Draft, hundreds of players are sitting by the phone just waiting and hoping that it will ring to be told that they had been drafted into the league.

One of those waiting, was Kansas State star Deuce Vaughn. Seen as one of the more explosive runners in the draft, Vaughn had not heard his name called through the first five rounds - before he received a call from a Dallas area code.

Vaughn's father, Chris Vaughn is an assistant director of college scouting for the Cowboys, and called his son himself to give him the news as they both broke down in tears.

As he held back the emotion, Chris said: "Look here, man, do you want to come to work with me next week?", with son Deuce responding: "I wouldn't mind that at all."

The Cowboys draft room then erupted with cheers, as Chris handed the phone over to general manager and owner of the team, Jerry Jones who congratulated him on being selected.

Chris has been a scout with the Cowboys since 2017, after spending 18 years of collegiate coaching experience with the Texas Longhorns in Austin - where Deuce was born.

Seen as one of the more talented running backs in the draft, Vaughn is also the shortest NFL draft prospect to measure since 2003 - standing at 5'5.

Chris did not scout his son, leaving that to the other employees on the team, and he left the room throughout the process when they discussed the idea of selecting him.

Speaking to the media after the draft, Chris said: "He is the hardest worker I know and I am very proud to be his dad. That is what this league is made of - to have something that you can't put a measurement on.

"He has earned this opportunity by doing it the right way. I am excited and so emotional. When it happened, there was a sense of relief.

"To make that phone call to him - just 15 minutes after when I spoke to him he was at his lowest... he is a really mentally strong person. But when I could make the call (to tell him he was drafted) - it was the best call ever."

Cowboys owner Jones later said: "I've never had an experience like that in the draft room."
