A former Georgia Bulldog assistant is a head coach in the NFL. On Jan. 24, the Dallas Cowboys promoted former Georgia assistant Brian Schottenheimer to be their next head coach.
Schottenheimer replaces Mike McCarthy, who was fired after five years. He led the Cowboys to a 49-35 record, including a 1-3 record in the postseason.
Schottenheimer has grown steadily into this role with the Cowboys, going from a coaching analyst in 2022 to the offensive coordinator in 2023-24. In 2023, he led the Cowboys to the No. 1 offense in the league. The Cowboys are stressing continuity and will keep the pairing of Schottenheimer and quarterback Dak Prescott.
He has been an offensive coordinator for several NFL and college teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and New York Jets. He was the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2015, Mark Richt’s last year with the program.
The 51-year-old has an NFL legacy. His late father, Marty Schottenheimer, earned 200 regular-season wins in his career.
