The Dallas Cowboys have officially announced the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach. Schottenheimer, who previously served as the team's offensive coordinator for two seasons, will be taking over the head coaching role from Mike McCarthy, who recently parted ways with the organization following a disappointing 7-10 season.
Despite missing out on the opportunity to interview other potential candidates like Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, and Aaron Glenn earlier in the process, the Cowboys have shown confidence in Schottenheimer's abilities to lead the team.
Schottenheimer initially joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a coaching analyst before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023, where he played a key role in quarterback Dak Prescott's successful season, leading the team to win the NFC East with the fifth-ranked offense in the league.
However, the 2024 season presented challenges for the Cowboys as they finished 16th in total offense after Prescott suffered a season-ending injury. Despite this setback, Schottenheimer's performance as offensive coordinator impressed team owner Jerry Jones, who ultimately selected him as the new head coach over other notable candidates like Deion Sanders and Jason Witten.
With nearly three decades of experience as an offensive assistant coach, Schottenheimer has previously served as an offensive coordinator for teams such as the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks before joining the Cowboys. Notably, Schottenheimer comes from a football family background, as his father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a highly successful NFL head coach with the ninth-most wins in NFL history.
