A team of dedicated volunteers in Dalbeattie are raising money to boost the international earthquake relief effort in Turkey and Syria.
A rota of helpers, led by Jean Collier, are manning the pop-up shop opposite the Maxwell Arms every day from 10am to 4pm.
Jean, from Portling, originally only intended to run the appeal until Saturday. But so many goods have been handed in that now she reckons it will be Tuesday at least before the mercy mission can be brought to a close.
She told the News: “We have been inundated with extremely high-quality donations which we sell to raise money for all the charities operating in Turkey and Syria.
“I would like to place on record my enormous thanks to all the local people who have supported the venture.
“Without them nothing would have been able to happen.
“Such has been the response that we will have to stay open at least until next Tuesday.”
Jean, a retired senior music teacher and lecturer, added: “I have a fantastic team of volunteers helping me and I thank all of them too.
“When I retired I had 27 years working as a volunteer for Barnardo’s.
“My grandmother actually went out into the street and brought in the first ever Barnardo’s children into these homes.”
