Goal hero Liam Douglas grabbed Dalbeattie Star’s cup final winner then revealed he never wanted extra-time.
The defender nabbed only his second goal of the season in their 3-2 triumph over Caledonian Braves to clinch the Southern Counties Challenge Cup at Annan’s Galabank ground.
Douglas struck eight minutes from time and celebrated wildly with team mates.
He said: “Just before the corner came in I said to their right back that I didn’t fancy extra time.
“It was a powerful header and I am delighted to get the winning goal. We had boys missing but we have a great group here who are amazing.
“I have won a few things at school but this is my first big trophy.
“It’s just my second goal of the season but it counts.
“It will be sad with manager Chris Jardine moving on (to Lochar Thistle) and he has been a good servant to the club.”
Jardine, who replaced Ritchie Maxwell during the season, told how he was working on the morning of the match with Dumfries and Gallloway Council as a duty officer and said: “I won’t be out for any celebrations as I am back working in the morning. I got away early to prepare for the final.
“I am quite emotional just now. It is like mixed emotions with the win but with me moving on.
“It’s such a good group of players here and, for a variety of reasons, this could be the last time we could be together as a team.
“But they have been great and deserved to go out and finish on a high.
“There were some outstanding performances and we only had 13 fit players. Lee Wells the club captain only played his second game in eight months because of a knee injury and probably needs an operation.
“If the new manager coming in can keep that nucleus of the team and add a few others then he will have a very good team.”
