Dalbeattie Primary holds celebration for Green Flag and outdoor classroom opening

Dalbeattie Primary held a combined celebration to mark their eighth Eco Schools Green Flag and open their outdoor classroom and trim trail.

These exciting new additions to the outdoor learning area and general wellbeing have formed a vital part of the eco committee’s recent action plan, so it seemed fitting to bring the occasions together.

The ceremony started with removing the ribbons from the outdoor classroom – jointly funded by the People’s Project and the Rotary Club of Dalbeattie and District – and the trim trail, funded by the Bert and Ruth Dunn Charitable SCI0 and the William Heughan Trust.

The school is grateful to these funding bodies and charitable trusts who donated so generously.

Around £17,500 has been spent so far but many smaller items have still to be bought to complete the project.

Altogether, £23,545 was raised for the School Grounds for Outdoor Wellbeing project, including £1,000 from Tesco through their Groundwork UK fund and the in-store token vote in Castle Douglas, and £500 from Spar in Dalbeattie.

A further £1,000 was raised from two years of school sponsored walks and £45 came from festive tray bakes.

The opening ceremony was followed by a special assembly where the eco committee gave a presentation summarising their work over the last two years.

The eco committee were then joined by invited guests for refreshments.

Those attending included representatives from local groups, businesses including Dalbeattie Garden Centre, Spar, Londis, Co-op and Roan’s Dairy and other organisations who have helped with the eco work.

The Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry was unable to attend but was represented by Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Mark Jardine, who was also present representing The People’s Project.
