Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson, 32, is currently the star of the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
Dakota embodies the character of Anne Elliot, a woman persuaded not to marry the love of her life because he was poor, and then follows their story as they meet again.
In contrast to the Netflix romance, the actress keeps her real-life relationships very close to her chest.
In January 2017, Dakota sparked rumours about her sexuality when in an interview with Vogue, she said she was “fascinated by young women coming to terms with their sexuality”, and that she had been “experiencing that in my own life, and it’s very interesting to me”.
She went on to say: “Can we make things really juicy? Can we say that I’m taking this time to explore my bisexuality?”
Other than those comments, she keeps her relationships relatively private, but here is what we do know.
Chris Martin
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have been in a couple since 2017, three years after his divorce with Gwenyth Paltrow in 2014.
Dakota and Chris have never walked the red carpet together, and have kept their relationship extremely low profile.
There were some rumours in 2019 that they split for several months, but that has not been publicly confirmed.
The pair are often pictured together on holiday and walking holding hands.
In October 2021, Martin publicly dedicate his song “universe” to Dakota during a Coldplay concert.
He said: "This is about my universe, and she's here."
A couple of months later, Dakota told Elle that “We've been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it's nice to be at home and be cozy and private.”
Chris’ former wife Gwenyth Paltrow, and Dakota get on extremely well and the former told Harper’s Bazaar that she “adores” Dakota.
Matt Hitt
Dakota was linked to indie guitarist and singer, Matthew Hitt between 2014-2016, though reports claim it was a very on and off again relationship.
They began dating in September 2014, split in early 2015, gave it another go at some point later that year before finally calling it quits in 2016.
Reportedly, the pair split because they struggled to find the time to see each other whilst Dakota was filming.
Jordan Masterson
The Fifty Shades of Grey actress was reportedly dating actor Jordan Masterson, who starred in The-40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005, in 2013.
When the news of Dakota playing Anastasia Steele was public knowledge, Jordan's sister Alanna posted on Twitter : "Everyone is so proud of you Dakota."
In October that year Dakota did mention having a boyfriend, but didn't name him: "I have a boyfriend that I've been with for a while. I've only been in long-term relationships. I've never really dated."
It is not clear how long the relationship lasted, or why they split.
Noah Gersh
According to multiple sources, musician Noah Gersh was Dakota’s childhood sweetheart after the pair met in school aged 16/17.
Marc Shapiro, who wrote The Unauthorized Biography of Dakota Johnson, wrote that Noah was an “anchor” for the actress during school and years after.
They were together for at least four and a half years, and apparently ended their relationship in 2012 as Dakota became more famous.
