Dak Prescott Addresses Cowboys’ Decision to Trade for Trey Lance

When the news dropped Saturday that the Cowboys were acquiring quarterback Trey Lance from the 49ers, fans began wondering what current Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott’s reaction would be.

Prescott spoke with ESPN’s Todd Archer and sounded relatively positive about the team bringing in the former first round pick.

“I mean obviously understand it’s a business,” Prescott said,. “That’s a first-round talent and you’re always trying to make your team better. But that was the front office so we’re going to welcome him as we do any teammate and hopefully he just makes us better and we’re going to continue to get back at it and know that we’ve got one goal as a team.”

The quarterback noted that he wasn’t given a heads-up from owner Jerry Jones about the Lance signing, but he didn’t really expect to.

“I can’t say that I necessarily expected [a heads-up], no,” Prescott said. “I understand though that that’s business. I understand that they’re probably on a timeline, they need to get something done. He felt like that strengthened this team and, yeah, ready to welcome [Lance] and, yeah, I mean knowing the strength of the quarterback room that we have.”

The 30-year-old added that he wasn’t really “surprised” with the news just because he’s been in the league for a while.

Prescott has yet to agree to a contract extension with the Cowboys, meaning his future is uncertain following the 2024 season. He led Dallas to the divisional round of the playoffs last season before losing to Lance’s former team, the 49ers.

Lance was downgraded to the third-string quarterback position in San Francisco, which prompted trade talks. Last season, the 2021 No. 3 pick was named the starter, but he only made it to Week 2 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
