Daithi O Se reveals he has to take naps in his dressing room before going live on RTE due to lingering Covid effects

Daithi O Se revealed he has to take daily naps in his dressing room before going live on TV every afternoon, due to the lasting effects of covid.

The RTE Today host tested positive for the virus at the end of January, and remained off air as he isolated at home with what he described as ‘flu-like’ symptoms.

But almost four months later, the busy host, who commutes from his house in Galway to the studio in Cork daily, said that it was the tiredness that came afterwards that was the worst to bounce back from when he returned to the screen.

“I was a bit tired for a while to be honest after it. I kind of had a flu, head cold, kind of a chesty cough and that was it, thankfully it wasn’t too bad.

“But I was tired for a good while after it. And I’m kind of only coming out of it in the last week or so to be honest with you.

“Whatever it is about 3pm, I always get tired around that time, and that’s showtime.

“I’d have often gone to sleep from half two to three o’clock here for the past couple of weeks just to close my eyes for half an hour just to give me that boost.

“Inside of the dressing room there is a nice seat and I pulled over another seat and had my legs up and that was it. And it is good for you, I don’t care what anyone says,” he added.

The Kerry native is going to need all the power naps he can get in over the next few months, as he prepares for the highly anticipated return of the Rose of Tralee after two years of no show due to the pandemic.

But the proud father-of-one, Ogie, eight, said that he has significantly reduced his workload outside of his RTE dayjob, after getting a taste for spending more time at home with his family over the past two years.

“I’m picking and choosing the things that I really want to do, that’s one thing, before the pandemic I was out every weekend working and now I prefer to be at home. The young fella is eight, and he is training and playing matches at the weekend.

“And that’s where I want to be instead of out working.”

But the well known star says he is adamant not to embarrass his son with any sideline coaching, adding: “I’m the dad who keeps his mouth shut on the sidelines.

“I had a father who used to be roaring, so I know exactly how my young fella would feel if I started pipping up.

“I’m very conscious of that as well.”

Dáithí, 45, who is a longtime ambassador for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland was speaking as they launched the ‘Tea Day Comeback’ set to take place on Thursday, May 5th.

After two years of cancelled events and virtual fundraisers, Daithi has joined forces with his colleague Sinead Kennedy and the ASI to call on the nation to come together again for a cup of tea and a chat on May 5th to help raise funds for vital dementia support and services.

The ASI is asking the nation to get involved with local Tea Day events in their homes, gardens, workplaces, schools, local community centres or somewhere special.

“Can you believe it? It’s been three years since we’ve been able to gather for a proper Tea Day get-together. So, let’s make up for lost time, lost connection, and lost funds and come together to make 2022 the Great Tea Day Comeback Year!

“On Thursday, May 5th we want everyone to have a chat, a laugh, a brew and donate a few euro to The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Tea Day campaign to help provide essential dementia-specific services for the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland.

“Alzheimer’s and dementia is a nationwide issue – it affects so many families right across Ireland. It reaches across generations, genders and affects people of all kinds of backgrounds. By hosting your very own Tea Day on May 5th, you’ll be making it possible for those living with dementia and their carers to access vital supports.

“Tea brings us all together – and we need that more than ever right now! Register for your pack at www.teaday.ie today and get the kettle on to make your strongest cup of tea yet!”
