Dagenham shooting: Man with gun shot dead in stand-off with Met police in east London

A man died when armed police fired on a home during a stand-off in east London.

The Metropolitan Police said firearms officers were called to a terraced property in Weston Green, Dagenham shortly before 8pm on Thursday by an occupant who said he planned to take his own life.

The man, believed to be aged 40, also told officers he had loaded firearms.

A specialist negotiator was contacted and continued efforts to engage with him before shots were fired by marksmen just before 9pm.

Despite the efforts of police and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at 9.30pm.

A search of the house found a non-police gun. Nobody else was believed to be on the premises.

Aerial pictures from the scene this morning show a forensic tent set up in a front garden and discarded equipment used by medics to attempt first aid, including CPR.

Commander Kyle Gordon said: “My thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has died, with the local community in Dagenham and the officers involved in this incident.

“While formal identification has yet to take place, officers believe he was aged 40. His next of kin has been informed.

“They will receive our full support.”

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been informed.

An IOPC spokesman added: “We have been notified by the Metropolitan Police Service that a man has been fatally shot, during an incident in Dagenham, east London, shortly before 9pm last night.

“We have begun an independent investigation and our investigators were sent to the scene and the police post-incident procedures to begin gathering information.

“We have no further information at this time.”
