Two women have been taken to hospital after a bus collided with a tree in Dagenham, east London.

Photos from the scene showed the roof of the bus had been ripped off in the crash, which happened in Hedgemans Road around 10am on Wednesday.

Met police officers and paramedics from London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene where they found two injured women.

They were both taken to hospital as a precaution, said a Met spokesperson, adding that their injuries were not life-threatening nor life-changing.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash along with its operator Stagecoach and Transport for London.

Stevie Fletcher, who lives nearby, said the roof of the bus had been taken “clean off”.

Photos appeared to show the roof lying intact on the road by the wreckage of the bus. The rear panel of the upper deck also appeared to be bent backwards, though it was still attached to the bus, and the upper front window was smashed.

“I heard sirens and looked out of my window to see emergency services just up the road,” Ms Fletcher told the PA news agency.

“I went to have a look and the bus roof had been taken clean off, apparently by a tree.

“A friend of mine was on that bus, she was on the lower deck.”

TfL spokesperson said: “A route 145 bus collided with a tree in Barking and Dagenham.

“Two passengers were taken to hospital and we wish them a full and speedy recovery. Thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.

“We're determined to ensure London's bus network is safe for everyone and are working with the police, the bus operator, Stagecoach, and the council to investigate this incident.”

They also said the local council has been asked to cut down the remains of the tree after the crash.
