A child was found dead in a locked bedroom of a home in Horsham, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, while the mother's car was found submerged in the ocean, police say.
The 11-year-old boy's father told police he woke up this morning to find the master bedroom door locked. Police were called to the property at around 7am local time (12pm BST).
He said his son had spent the night with his mum in that room, according to Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
The father also had noticed his wife's black Toyota Highlander SUV was missing from the property's garage.
When police arrived, they entered the locked bedroom to find the lifeless body of the kid, ABC News reported.
The cause of the child's death hasn't been determined as of yet and an autopsy is pending by the coroner's office.
The SUV was found partially submerged in the ocean just off Beach Avenue in Cape May, New Jersey.
The mother has also been found, police said, although the circumstances under which her car ended up submerged in the ocean remain unclear.
Authorities found the woman in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, a short time after discovering the body of the child.
The area where the woman and the car were found is over 120 miles and at least a two-hour drive away from the family's home in Pennsylvania.
No charges have been filed as of yet and the investigation is still ongoing.
