Dad under fire for forcing daughter to cook in 'traditional role' or 'suffer consequences'

A dad has been criticised online for forcing his daughter to cook a family meal, saying that it's a "traditional family role" that must be fulfilled.

The daughter wasn't happy with this request, but her dad said that she'd "suffer consequences" if she didn't do as she was told. Her mother was meant to be doing the cooking for the guests that they'd invited over, but fell unwell the day before.

Not keen on taking on the task of preparing a meal, the daughter suggested ordering a takeaway instead - which her dad saw as "rude" when dinner guests had been invited over, the Mirror reports.

He took to Reddit to explain that his 21-year-old daughter was a college student who lived at the house rent-free, with the condition that she take turns cooking, cleaning and looking after her younger sibling.

The dad wrote: "Am I an a**hole for making my daughter cook dinner for my friends and I?

"A few days ago I invited my friends over for dinner. My wife was going to cook up something for us as she usually does but unfortunately, the day before they were to arrive she was feeling a bit nauseous, but told me it would probably go away the next day (it didn't)."

He continued: "My wife told me the next day she felt even worse. I didn't want to make my sick wife cook dinner, so I asked my daughter who was free at the time if she could do the cooking instead. She got an attitude with me and said I should just order takeout."

The father then explained that he thought this would be rude, and that they had an "agreement" that the daughter should be fulfilling - and that she'd "suffer consequences" if she didn't.

She did eventually end up cooking the meal, but has maintained a frosty attitude to her dad ever since. He says he understands why his daughter is upset, but is conflicted over whether he's done anything wrong.

He added: "I do not view my wife and daughter as servants who are beneath me. We just follow a tradition that advocates for certain roles within the family."

In the post's comments, people were critical of the dad for making his daughter cook the meal on such short notice, with many wondering why he couldn't just do it himself.

One wrote: "You're an a**hole for a few reasons. You shouldn't invite people over to a home where someone is sick and should cancel the event. Why are you incapable of cooking? Your daughter isn't your servant just because she's not paying to live with you. It's gross that you treat her like she is."

Another added: "How about you cook for your own friends instead of getting your wife and daughter to."

And a third chimed in: "Why don't you cook yourself instead of delegating it to a busy college student. Gives off misogynistic vibes tbh. "Me? COOK? Absolutely not. That's a WOMAN'S JOB"."

Others claimed that he should have just cancelled the get-together, seeing as his wife was sick.

One person wrote: "Why are you having people over when your wife is sick? Why are you expecting your daughter to be your professional caterer? Most importantly, why aren’t you cooking?"
