Dad tells son he won't pay for wedding if he lets step-dad walk down aisle

A groom has been left with a major dilemma after his dad threatened to pull out of paying for the wedding after his son asked him to share best-man duties.

The dad had agreed to foot the bill for his son Karter's big day but after he was told that he wanted him to walk him down the aisle alongside his step-dad Steven, he began to question his decision, reports the Daily Mirror.

Now the dad has given Karter an ultimatum, either he ditches Steven or he won't be paying.

Explaining his side of the story in a post to Reddit, the father wrote: "I was still serving in the army when my oldest son 'Karter' 23M was 5 - 10. Me and his mom were divorced by then but, I always made every effort to be a good dad and spend time with him while on leave.

"When I left the Army I spent every moment I could with my boy. We still have a good relationship. Now my ex remarried pretty quick to a nice guy 'Steven' which of course he did treat Karter well and I'm not knocking that even though we don't get along but, I'm his actual dad."

He continued: "Karter's getting married to his fiancé "Clark" 25M at the end of next month. My ex and Steven are kinda strapped for cash and Clark's family isn't exactly wealthy so they asked me if I'd foot the bill. I agreed cause of course I'd do anything for my boy."

He continued: "Come to find out yesterday that Karter wants both me and Steven to walk him down the aisle.

"That honestly really p****d me off you know cause I'm Karter's actual dad and I'm paying for everything and I've always been there for him. It hurt a lot that he'd want some step-parent to walk him down the aisle."

The father and son had a "huge fight" and the ultimatum was laid down.

The furious parent explained: "I told him that I wouldn't pay for the wedding if Steven walks him down the aisle. My ex is p****d and thinks I'm being selfish but, my dad thinks I should push harder."

Other users on the platform overwhelmingly sided with Karter.

One person replied: "If Karter said ONLY the step-dad will be walking him down the aisle that's another thing. But he wants BOTH his father figures to walk him down the aisle and that’s perfectly reasonable."

A second agreed: "It's not about you. It's about your kid. Who loves BOTH his dads who have been there the majority of his life." Someone else commented: "'Look, I will lay down my life for this kid, walk through fire, jump into a vat of lemon juice after 1000 paper cuts, but another man walking on his other side? Unreasonable'."

But another thought: "Right or wrong I can certainly empathize with original poster feeling some kind of way about this whole thing."
