Dad slammed for teaching teen daughter how to gut fish as he claims it's a 'life skill'

A man has sparked outrage after teaching his teenage daughter how to gut a fish - claiming it's an important 'life skill'. He explained how he has been teaching his 13 and 10-year-old daughters how to cook, clean and maintain a car because they're all necessary skills needed to get by.

But as his eldest daughter is now a teenager, he decided to teach her how to catch her own food, prepare and cook it. Taking to Reddit, he said: "This summer we went camping and she had to make the fire and tent. We went fishing but didn’t catch anything. I went to port and I bought a few whole fish not gutted.

"We live on the ocean and this is a life skill, it’s common to buy fish whole. If she wants to eat fish, she needs to know how to gut them. I was going to teach her how to process a whole fish. I think this is important to do and understand. It’s a fish and she was grossed out, but I made her do it and then we cooked it."

But when they returned home, his teenage daughter went straight to her mum to tell her how he "forced her to gut a fish".

He added: "This resulted in an argument about forcing the kids to do stuff but it’s a life skill and we forced them to learn how to cook and do laundry so I don’t see the difference. She is mad at me and so is my oldest."

While most users praised him for teaching his daughters how to cook, clean and maintain a car, many argued teaching her how to gut a fish was one step too far.

One user said: "You couldn’t even catch a fish for the life experience, you had to buy one.

"Why didn’t you suck it up and stay out all day to feed your family? Oh that’s right, it’s not actually a life skill these day.

"The life skill your daughter learned is that you won’t listen to her."

Another user added: "I can cook, I can clean, I can do laundry, I can do many things.

"But not once in my more than 60 years on this earth have I needed to gut a fish. Unless you regularly catch your own fish, it is not an essential life skill.

"By all means, if she wants to know how to gut a fish, teach her. But forcing her makes you the a***hole."

A third user said: "It's no longer a life skill to gut a fish. They come in the store pre-packaged.

"You're wrong and controlling. When you look back on where you went wrong with her when she's 18 and doesn't visit, think about the days when you pulled stunts like this."
