Dad's shock as glass table from DFS 'explodes' after he shelled out £700 for it

A dad was shocked after a glass table "exploded" after he had spent a whopping £700 on the stylish item.

The "loud bang like an explosion" happened after Malcolm Nicholson had settled down to watch a rugby international.

He first though something had happened to his French doors due because of strong winds outside, the Daily Record reports.

But he found his table was completely wrecked and glass covered his dining area.

The 51-year-old firefighter and his son, 21, were sitting next to the "explosion".

Malcom and his wife Joan, 56, contacted DFS immediately who told him they were "looking into the matter".

But the couple, from Skelmorlie, North Ayrshire, were furious when furniture firm DFS claimed the manufacturers were taking "no responsibility" for the incident.

Malcolm, who shelled out more than £700 on the table just 14 months ago, fears for other customers who bought the item and further damage which could be done.

The dad-of-one said: "I was watching Ireland v Wales in the Six Nations just along from our dining table, in the living room.

"All of a sudden we heard this loud bang, just like an explosion.

"When I realised it was the table I was stunned, there was glass everywhere."

Video footage shows the extent of the damage.

The entire glass top of the table is destroyed with the carpet blanketed with shards of glass.

Shelves of the adjacent unit are covered in glass too, as well as the arm of a swivel chair shown in the images - which is where Malcom's son was seated.

Malcolm added: "I sat at the table earlier to do a bit of work on the laptop but that was it.

"Nothing was on it other than a note pad and a pen.

"We bought it in late 2020 and have had no issues with it before. We keep it clean so would know if there were any cracks."

The item was part of a costly DFS haul for the Nicholsons who renovated their living and dining areas in 2020 spending between £4,000 and £5,000 on a couch and some units.

"DFS manufacturers taking no responsibility for this is just staggering," Malcom said.

"To think how much money we spent on DFS just over a year ago and now we're left with nothing.

"This could have been so much worse, people could own this table and have babies or pets at home.

"My son was sat really close, glass could have gone in this eye.

"We're really disappointed."

A spokeswoman from DFS said: "DFS are looking in to this."
