Dad-of-two killed when flying debris struck van during Storm Eunice

A father-of-two tragically died when flying debris from Storm Eunice smashed the window of a van. The incident occurred at 2.10pm on Friday during the extreme conditions.

It happened at Switch Island on Merseyside and the victim has been formally named as Stephen Matthews, 68, from Aintree, who as a passenger in the vehicle, reports the LiverpoolECHO.

Merseyside Police rushed to the scene following reports of a van being damaged during the storm. Officers found debris being blown around by the galeforce winds had flown through the windscreen and hit Mr Matthews, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man driving the van was not injured in the incident.

Family members have paid tribute to Mr Matthews and said he was "taken too soon".

They said: “Stephen was a popular and well-known member of the community who was tragically taken from us too soon. The beloved husband of Sylvia and devoted dad to Jonathan and Robert, he will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.”

Other people also expressed their shock at the incident. Pat Moriatis said: "Very sad news my thoughts go out to his family, friends & also to the driver who must be devastated."

Annie Sharpes said: "Such a horrible thing to happen to someone just going about their business. That could've been any one of us. So shocking, poor man."
