Dad high on weed and monkey dust 'tried to throw his daughter out of upstairs window'

A dad has been jailed after "trying to throw his own daughter out of an upstairs window" while high on cannabis and phencyclidine - known as monkey dust.

James Owens, 29, was in a drug-induced state when he turned up at his ex's home wearing just boxer shorts and a high-vis jacket on February 4 of this year.

He turned on his ex's new partner, punching him and hit him with a pole, before he was ushered away.

However, he returned to the home not long after, as he thought he had to get his ex and daughter away from the property.

He picked his daughter up by her neck and opened an upstairs window to throw her out but she fell to the floor as he was tackled by his ex, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard.

Owens has been locked up for 26 months, StokeonTrentLive reports, after subjecting his daughter to the violence which left her fearing for her life.

Mr Tom Sherrington, prosecuting, said that Owens had driven his vehicle and abandoned it in Rushton Spencer, on February 4 this year.

He ran to his ex partner's home at 2.30pm and was heavily under the influence of phencyclidine; a dissociative anaesthetic also known as monkey dust, and cannabis.

He let himself into his ex's home as it was unlocked. His ex's partner escorted him out the house and asked him to leave. But Owens punched him to the head several times causing the man to fall to the floor. And while down, he hit him with the metal bar to the head.

The man was left with a bloodied nose, bruising to his left arm, and wounds to his face. Owens went back to the house and went upstairs to where his ex was with her two children.

Mr Sherrington said: "He shouted that his daughter needed to get out. He grabbed her by the neck, opened the bedroom window and tried to force her out until she fell to the ground.

"The child thought he was going to kill her. He was tackled by his ex who pinned him to the bed allowing the two children to escape to the safety of a neighbour's."

Police arrived Owens was arrested. In a victim statement Owens's ex said she had to have six weeks off work after the incident and resigned from her position. She now suffers nightmares, insomnia and flashbacks. She also suffers with anxiety in public.

Her youngest daughter is now fearful of Owens and her eldest, who is Owens's child, is now frightened.

She is now on medication to help her sleep and is undergoing counselling. She feared he was going to kill her. Her partner added that Owens violated their safe space and he was left traumatised and upset.

Owens, of no fixed address, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm; two charges of assault by beating; possession of an offensive weapon and affray.

Mr Steve Hennessey, defending, conceded it was a harrowing and frightening experience for the victims. Mr Hennessey said: "His relationship with his daughter is fractured, perhaps beyond repair. It is something he has brought upon himself.

"His drug and alcohol addiction or habit spiralled out of control. It had caused significant damage to relationships. It had cost him his employment.

"He had consumed monkey dust. It was a factor in his behaviour. He has a genuine understanding of the fear that he caused. He is determined not to allow the downward spiral to happen again."

Judge David Fletcher described it as a "horrific set of circumstances". The judge made a deprivation order for the metal bar. He also made a restraining order which prevents Owens from contacting his four victims for 10 years, save via solicitors in relation to contact with his daughter.
