Dad 'can't stop daughter, 4, crying' after school's 'disgusting' decision

A dad said his daughter is "inconsolable" after she was banned from a school trip based on attendance.

Rimrose Hope Primary School in Seaforth had planned to take pupils on a trip to celebrate the end of the year. However, only pupils with 95% and over attendance were allowed to attend.

The decision was met with complaints by parents, including Richard Campbell who said he was "disgusted" when he received a letter saying his daughter would not be allowed to go on the trip.

Richard told the ECHO: “My daughter had contracted scarlet fever and then shigella while on holiday and spent weeks off school… I think every child should be rewarded and all children should be held to the same level.

“It is not like they are in high school and walking in on their own. If they were in high school and their attendance was poor for the most part that would be on the kid but not when they are still so young.

"Some parents might not be able to bring their child to school, they might have an illness themselves you don't know what might be going on in someone's life. Then the children get punished for it."

The cinema trip that was supposed to take place today, June 30, was cancelled by the school earlier this week. Instead, the school will be hosting a summer fayre which all children are able to attend.

However there will also be a movie showing, but only those with 95% attendance will be allowed to attend and there will be "ice cream, popcorn, and fruit shoots”.

It is not known why the school cancelled the initial cinema trip.

Richard said: “I took her to the school this morning but have had to keep her off because she is inconsolable and very upset that she was not allowed to watch the movie.

"Even though they are not going to the cinema anymore the school is not treating the children equally. I feel this is even worse than before as now the children who can’t go will have to sit in a classroom and listen to the other children laughing and having a good time.

“While they sit there feeling like they are not good enough. All children in a school environment should be treated equally and there should be no discrimination towards any child under any circumstances.”

A spokesperson for Rimrose Hope Primary School said: "Our summer fun day celebration is for all children at our school to celebrate the great achievements they've made this year.

"We also have a movie planned for those children who have great attendance in school as we know how important it is to be in school as much as we can. In the past we have gone to the cinema however this is taking place on the school site this year but we still have sweets and popcorn at the ready".
