Dad beat, strangled and kidnapped wife with child in the car in three days of horror

A 31-year-old man was found to have strangled his partner before beating her with a hammer and kidnapping her from their family home.

Nathanial Corkish hit his then-partner with a hammer, kidnapped her and strangled her a number of times over three days. On Friday, November 11, 2022, Corkish strangled his partner and dragged her up the stairs by the neck before hitting her multiple times in the head and face with a hammer so she wouldn't make too much noise.

He then proceeded to strangle her until she was unconscious. He then removed the carpet from the stairs and stripped the bed to hide the blood. He burned the carpet in the garden of his home.

After his partner stayed in bed until November 13, she asked him to call an ambulance but he refused. When she tried to get help from a neighbour he was waiting outside and told her he would take her to the hospital.

She got in the car with their child but instead of taking her to the hospital he instead drove for 12 hours and when she asked to get out he strangled her. She was reported missing in the early hours of November 14 and shortly before midday on Monday, November 14, a Merseyside Police officer spotted the car in Wallasey before pulling it over.

Officers found the woman in the back of the car with serious facial injuries and the rear windows had t-shirts pulled over them so no one could see inside. The child was found in the passenger seat of the car unharmed.

The woman suffered facial, skull and brain injuries, and was put in an induced coma for four days. She was only deemed well enough to speak to police on November 29.

In her victim impact statement, she explained how the ordeal had affected both her physical and mental health. She has lost some of her vision in her right eye and has impaired taste and smell as a result of facial scarring after surgery.

She struggles to sleep and has flashbacks as well as not being able to pick up heavy objects, including her child. The victim also has issues with her balance and struggles to wash herself, so she is unable to leave her home.

Corkish, from Skelmersdale, pleaded guilty in December last year to causing grievous bodily harm, kidnap and non-fatal strangulation and was today sentenced to eight years in prison with a two-year extended licence.

Emanuele Bellanca, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West said: "Nathaniel Corkish is an extremely dangerous man who carried out a campaign of violence against his partner over three days in the presence of his own child.

"After attacking her, he lured her into his car on the pretence he would take her to the hospital, refusing to let her out of the car and strangling her if she dared to ask to be let out. During the 12-hour journey she feared for her life believing he was searching for a burial site for her body.

"I would like to recognise the action taken by the Merseyside Police ensuring the safety of this woman when they stopped the car. I would also like to commend her bravery in supporting the case against the man who inflicted the most appalling physical, emotional and mental injuries upon her. I hope that following today’s sentence she can begin to move on with her life."
