A father whacked a man with a golf club after a row over a sleeping baby.
Martin Jackson was angry at the noise Steven Beggs and his friends were making outside his Campbell Court home in Ayr on June 28, 2019.
Jackson had a days-old child at the time and told the group: "That's enough — give it a by."
But the men instead turned on the 30 year-old dad, who was floored having been punched, kicked and struck with a golf club.
Jackson unsteadily got to his feet before managing to grab the weapon and then strike Beggs.
Beggs feared he was "dying" as he collapsed unable to feel down one side of his body.
A judge at the High Court in Glasgow heard how the 28-year-old suffered a fractured skull, causing swelling and bleeding on the brain.
Beggs ended up in rehab for two months and now has a weakness down his right side, which is likely to be permanent.
Prosecutor William Frain-Bell today told how police turned up at Jackson's home after his partner reported he had been assaulted.
Jackson stated to officers: "I'll be honest — I hit the guy because he came at me with a golf club."
He later insisted he was "sorry" and added: "Send my deepest regards. I am shocked and saddened."
Jackson today pleaded guilty to assaulting Beggs to his permanent disfigurement and impairment, as well as to the danger of his life.
Mr Frain-Bell: "The Crown accepts that the assault was committed under provocation.
"Jackson was annoyed at Beggs and his friends for refusing to keep the noise levels down."
He added Jackson did "retaliate" having been attacked himself initially.
But, the advocate depute stated, Jackson's response was "disproportionate" due to the force of the blow.
Judge Scott Pattison remanded Jackson in custody and deferred sentencing for reports until March.
