A dad let himself into his ex's home and battered her new boyfriend in bed, pushing off his daughter who begged him to stop.
Chad Edwards, 30, crept to his ex-girlfriend's room and found her in bed with her boyfriend before unleashing 50 punches to his head and body, Stafford Crown Court heard.
Edwards' daughter heard the commotion and was pushed out of the room when she tried to stop the attack.
Edwards, from Branston, Staffordshire, admitted one count of actual bodily harm towards the boyfriend and one count of assault by beating after he elbowed his ex-partner in the stomach while she attempted to stop his attack.
He also admitted criminal damage to his ex-partner's phone and her boyfriend's car, which, after the attack, he had taken a hammer to and smashed the windows, StaffordshireLive reports.
Prosecutor Andrew Wallace told the court: "The defendant was in a relationship with a woman and had two children with her.
"She said there was no physical violence during the relationship but he was controlling and abusive. [They eventually split when] her daughter told her to 'tell daddy to go'.
"On November 10 he dropped off one of his children and noticed some Ann Summers underwear drying on the radiator. He wanted to know why she had these and grabbed her phone but she refused to let him have the code and he smashed her phone.
"He also took a front door key so on November 13 at 4am and let himself in the house. His ex-partner and her new boyfriend were in bed asleep. He attacked [the new boyfriend] while he was asleep, straddling him, punching him to the head and saying he was going to kill him.
"There were around 50 punches and lasted about two minutes. They said he was like an animal, out of control."
The boyfriend had significant bruising to his face, ribs, forearms and stomach. Edwards had elbowed his ex-partner in her stomach when she tried to stop the attack.
The court heard his daughter had come into the room and said 'daddy stop it' but he simply pushed her out of the room.
Edwards' defence barrister told the court there have been no subsequent problems.
He has a new partner and has been a stonemason for three years. His boss said he was honest, punctual and hard working.
In a statement, his new partner said he was a kind, caring and respectful individual. She said: "I believe his behaviour was totally out of character."
The barrister added: "He wholeheartedly regrets what happened by causing trauma and pain to everyone in the way that he did. On the evening of November 13, this young man saw red mist when he saw her in bed with another man.
"He utterly regrets what he did. It was a moment of madness, but there have been no problems since.
"They are carrying on as an estranged family. He is a hardworking young man. He is seeing his children and he had the foresight and bravery to admit what he had done to his new partner. If he could turn back time would. He has his whole life ahead of him."
Judge Paul Glenn DL, honorary recorder at Stoke, jailed Edwards for 12 months, telling him: "You took exception to her underwear and in temper and jealousy you took her phone, you smashed it in front of your two young children.
"Not content with that, you attacked her boyfriend as he lay in bed defenceless and repeatedly struck him. It must have been terrifying for him.
"Your eight-year-old daughter urged you to stop and you pushed her out of the room and resumed your attack on her boyfriend and then attacked his car, smashing the windows. You have expressed some remorse, but I am afraid this offence stems from possession and jealousy and you were unable to accept she had a new boyfriend."
His ex-partner and her boyfriend were also granted a five-year restraining order against Edwards.
