Dabo Swinney Shares Why Clemson’s Loss to Duke Was the ‘Weirdest Game’

Clemson’s upset loss to Duke on Monday night shook the college football world and it certainly left an impact on Dabo Swinney. The Tigers coach made some resounding comments after the game where he said the loss is a bit of a historic one for him.

“That’s the weirdest game I’ve ever been a part of,” Swinney said, per ESPN. “I’ve been beat. I’ve had my butt kicked. But that’s the strangest game I’ve ever been a part of.”

The Blue Devils won 28–7 in a lopsided affair but you wouldn’t guess that from the box score. Clemson both threw and rushed for 200 yards and even had more total yards than Duke, but somehow failed to come away with points on four different drives in the red zone.

Swinney himself said that Clemson was 108–0 all-time when both throwing and rushing for 200 yards.

“It’s almost indescribable what I just saw,” Swinney said. “It’s incredibly frustrating when you had so much opportunity.”

Clemson went into the season-opener as the No. 9 team in the nation, making this Duke’s first win over a Top 10 team since 1989.
