Cyclone Michaung causes disruptions at Hyderabad airport, 37 flights cancelled, many delayed

Severe disruptions were experienced at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) as a result of bad weather and heavy rains in Chennai, attributed to the cyclonic storm named ‘Michaung.’ A total of 37 flights have been cancelled, while numerous others are experiencing delays and diversions due to the unfavourable conditions.

Officials from GMR Hyderabad International Airport acknowledged the current situation and expressed concerns about potential escalation as the cyclone intensifies. They anticipate further delays and diversions throughout the day.

Among the flights disrupted at RGIA, there were 21 departures and 16 arrivals that were cancelled. As of Monday evening, there were delays in 6 departures and 12 arrivals. IndiGo airlines experienced the highest number of cancellations, with 30 flights affected. Additionally, Air India, Air Asia, and Alliance Air each had two cancellations, while SpiceJet had one cancelled flight.

The disrupted routes primarily include flights on the Hyderabad-Chennai route. In the morning on Monday, approximately four flights faced delays and diversions. However, following Chennai International Airport’s announcement of operational closure until 11 p.m, all flights operating between Hyderabad and Chennai were subsequently cancelled. Additional affected routes included flights from Hyderabad to Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Coimbatore, and a few flights to Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
