Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday October 24, said that "over 3.5 lakh people have been identified for evacuation from low-lying areas of the state as Cyclone Dana approaches."
She urged residents to take precautionary measures and cooperate with the authorities. So far, 2,43,374 people have taken shelter in camps set up by the administration.
Banerjee stated that she would personally monitor the situation from the state secretariat throughout the night. She added that the chief secretary and home secretary would also be keeping a close watch on developments, rejoining her on Friday morning.

"For the purpose of evacuation from low-lying areas, we have identified 3,56,941 people," Banerjee informed reporters at the state secretariat. A 24x7 helpline (2214 3526) has been activated, along with additional phone lines, to provide updates and assist the public. Banerjee also urged people not to spread rumors or cause panic.
In response to the cyclone, educational institutions have been closed to protect students. "I seek your cooperation. Be alert. If the police or the administration ask you to evacuate a place, please pay heed to their advice. Do not venture into the waters. Fishing is prohibited now," she said.
