A CYCLIST taking part in a “traffic free” organised event in Inverness has died after being hit by a car, police have said.
Emergency services were called to a crash involving a cyclist and a BMW 120 M Sport on Island Bank Road at around 12.10pm on Sunday.
Police said a 49-year-old male cyclist was taken to Raigmore Hospital, where he died a short time later.
The male driver and the female passenger of the car were not injured.
The road was closed to allow for crash investigations to take place and reopened around 6pm.
The male cyclist who died was taking part in Etape Loch Ness, Scotland’s largest closed-road cycle.
The event is advertised to participants as the chance to cycle 66 miles around Loch Ness on “traffic free roads”.
Police said enquiries into the incident to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
Sergeant Lewis Macleod of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.
“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to police to please get in touch with us.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 1334 of 27 April.
