Customers praise Nottinghamshire chippy £1.99 deal for 'bringing community together'

Customers have praised a family fun day organised by a Nottinghamshire chippy, claiming it has 'brought the community together'. Sea & Earth in Woodthorpe went the extra mile for National Fish & Chip Day on Friday, June 2, offering meals for just £1.99.

Thanks to the suppliers, the chip shop in Mansfield Road, was selling fish and chips or pie and chips at £1.99 and sausage or fishcake with chips at 99p. The deal was available from 12pm to 5pm.

Long queues formed in the sunshine for the chippy as a result, with customers declaring it a "great day" for everyone. Julie Webster, 58, said: “The queue was long but it went down so quickly.

“It's a great day for everyone, the sun is shining and the people are full of smiles.” May Elston, a healthcare assistant who took her grandson, Layton, 10, out for the day, said: “It’s been fantastic, the portions are great.

"It's brought the community and everyone together, we're very grateful.” A 69-year-old woman added: “The fish and chips are excellent, it's great quality.

“It's refreshing and nice to see a business doing something so kind even if they might lose any profits. It's just a wonderful idea.”

The car park area was transformed into a fairground with giant Connect 4, hop scotch, hook a duck and ball in a bucket to entertain families. There was also music and seating outside the shop.

Jane Deeley, from Keyworth, took her grandchildren Isabel, seven, and Archie, five, from East Leake, out for the day. “The food tastes really nice and fresh," said the 84-year-old. “The games and entertainment they have outside for the kids are great.

“I would definitely come here again if they did the deals as we’ve travelled quite far out to be here today. Aren’t we lucky to have places and people doing nice gestures like this.”

Andrew Constantinou, part owner of the shop, said: “We are doing it for half term, the cost of living and to bring smiles and joy to people.

“It may have cost us a bit but the outcome was really worth it. It’s nice to see everyone happy and not in misery, especially after the past few years.”
