Currys warns we've all been using our dishwashers wrongly and wasting water

With the cost of almost everything rising, many of us are trying to find ways to save money where we can.

With soaring energy bills, food, and fuel prices, every penny counts. On Wednesday, Currys issued a tip for people with a dishwasher to use less water and therefore save on bills.

A tweet from the electrical retailer's official account said: "So basically you shouldn't rinse your plates before putting them in the dishwasher as it costs more in water bills and the dishwasher detergents are actually designed to cling onto food particles and clean them off in the dishwasher itself".

A follow-up tweet added: "Scraping the big bits of food into the bin first can alleviate any drain or filter blockages."

The message prompted a number of Twitter users to ask the same question. Rob said: "But then [the food] clogs up your dishwasher drain ? Nah I prefer the old rinse and wash hahah". Currys replied: "Scrape the big bits in the bin first and you’ll be fine!"

It seems the retailer could be right. Australian cleaning expert Ashley Iredale previously told ABC : "There's absolutely no need to pre-rinse". Ashley, from consumer advocacy group CHOICE, said rinsing tricks dishwasher sensors into thinking plates are "clean".

Like Currys, he also recommends scraping your plate first to avoid debris clogging the machine.
