Authorities in Los Angeles County have implemented a curfew in areas under evacuation orders from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly in response to looting incidents following the wildfires. The curfew will remain in effect until county officials decide to lift the order.
The curfew restricts individuals from being in public places within evacuation zones, with exceptions made for those involved in fire response efforts or seeking medical assistance. Violating the curfew could result in fines of up to $1,000 or a prison sentence of up to six months.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has approved the deployment of National Guard troops to assist in maintaining order and preventing looting in the affected areas. Governor Newsom issued a stern warning, stating that looting will not be tolerated and that measures are being taken to safeguard evacuated communities.
Hundreds of National Guard members have been dispatched to support local law enforcement and are stationed at traffic control points to ensure public safety. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger reported that at least 20 individuals have been arrested for looting during the wildfires, emphasizing that such opportunistic behavior will not be allowed to persist.
Supervisor Barger condemned the looters as opportunists and expressed her determination to prevent further trauma for the affected communities. The collaborative efforts between law enforcement, the National Guard, and county officials aim to maintain order and protect the well-being of residents in the midst of the ongoing crisis.
