A child has died and another was left injured after being hit by a car on a sports pitch in Cumbria.
The driver of the car, a man aged in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the collision at the Kendal Rugby Union Football Club shortly before 5pm.
Officers said one of the children stuck by the car, a black BMW i40, had died, while another involved in the collision was being treated by paramedics.
The families of both children have been informed, said a Cumbria Constabulary spokesperson.
The force said specialist investigators were at the scene and that the area has been cordoned off as enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are carried out.
Officers added they were treating the incident as “isolated”, and that there was no suggestion that it was terror-related.
Police are asking for any witnesses to get in touch.
