Nadine Dorries has admitted breaking Netflix’s regulations by sharing her password with her mother and children who live across the country.

The Culture Secretary said she allowed four other households to log in on her account to take advantage of the “incredibly generous system”.

It came as Netflix launched a crackdown on password sharing after a drop in profits forced the streaming giants to lay off 150 employees – mostly in the US - amid a sharp slump in subscribers.

Ms Dorries told the Culture committee: “I thought it was always an incredibly generous system. I mean my Mum has access to my account, and the kids do. There are four other people that can access my Netflix account in different parts of the country.

“Well, we are probably not supposed to do that.”

Speaking at the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Thursday, Ms Dorries denied claims Channel 4 could switch to a Netflix-style subscription model to maintain funding after the Government’s attempts to sell off the channel.

Ms Dorries spoke about the privitisation plans which will be voted on by MPs after they were included in the recent media bill.

The broadcaster has been publicly owned since its creation in 1982 by the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher and is entirely funded by advertising.

She told the committee: “As a public service broadcaster that is not on the table, that is just not on the cards at all. I can’t see a scenario in which that would happen.”

Ms Dorries said she was on good terms with news presenter Cathy Newman.

However, she claimed the “edgy” broadcaster hadn’t done itself any favours over impartiality in an apparent reference to eyewitness reports Jon Snow allegedly shouted “F*** the Tories” at Glastonbury Festival five years ago - something the former anchor later said he had “no recollection” of doing.

“I have been on Channel 4 News a number of times. It is edgy. I am not going to justify a news programme whose anchor went out shouting obscenities about the Conservative Party.

“So they didn’t do themselves any favours sometimes on the news programme and I think that is probably as much as I want to say about that,” she said.
