Cult burger makers Burgerism to open first shop in Stockport

Burgerism, the cult burger flippers famed for serving their sandwiches out of a hole in the wall in Salford, are opening their first shop. The pick-up spot is being fitted out right now in the Stockport suburb of Gatley, in what was a former fast food outlet on the high street.

The spot will be for both pick up and used as a delivery hub too, thus able to service the South Manchester demand for the smashed burgers. The move follows setting up at Escape To Freight Island earlier this year, and also setting up a dark kitchen set-up in Ardwick last year and another in Leeds which opened this week.

It was set up by Mark Murphy in April 2018 and by word-of-mouth soon became a hit on Manchester’s food delivery scene, seeing a huge uplift during the pandemic when restaurants were closed. Now, it’s among the most used operators on Deliveroo, coming in at number eight in the whole of the UK.

“For the first time, we’ll see a sign above the door, and people will be able to experience Burgerism in a more tangible way,” Murphy told the M.E.N. “We’re really excited about it, and we’re had tons of people getting in touch too. We actually have a lot of people who drive to the Salford kitchen from Stockport, so this should help and open up our customer base a bit.”

At the moment, the brand feeds a massive 8,000 people per week in Manchester, and they’re currently the most-ordered burger on delivery apps in the city. They also won the Food Trader of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards, while Murphy has his sights on becoming to burgers what Domino's is to pizza and expanding nationwide.

As well as smashed burgers, Burgerism does a chicken burger called the Freebird, and chicken wings. The joint also has a few famous patrons to boast about now too. “Bradley Wiggins came down for the first time on Saturday,” Murphy said. “I don’t think he wore the yellow jersey though!”

Murphy hopes to be up and running in the new unit by late November.
