Former One Nation and independent senator Rod Culleton has faced court charged with assaulting a public officer.
The 57-year-old appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, when he seemed unaware of the details of the alleged offence last year.
Police documents lodged with the court outline an assault which occurred on October 14 at Ryansbrook, southeast of Perth.
Culleton, speaking from the court's public gallery, sought information from prosecutors about the charge.
Outside court he described his presence as a "conditional appearance".
"I had not received the proper paperwork. I asked the prosecution to give me the appropriate information on what it was about ... I have got the sheet and I am going to read it," he said.
Culleton said he believed the matter was connected to "helping another farmer defend his land".
It is understood Culleton was at an agricultural property being visited by a bailiff, accompanied by police officers, when the alleged assault occurred.
"The banks are up to their old tricks again," he said.
"I will get good advice ... I believe there is no originating process and the documents are incurable and deficient."
Chief Magistrate Steven Heath adjourned the matter and Culleton is scheduled to face court again on May 10.
