On Saturday, December 16 at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, unbeaten David Morrell Jr., the WBA Super Middleweight Champion, stunned supporters in his adopted homeland by defeating Sena Agbeko in the second round.
Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs), who is originally from Cuba, moved to Minneapolis when he came to the United States to start his professional career in 2019 and has since impressed fans at The Armory with six knockouts. Morrell, 25, easily defeated Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs) in front of the largest-ever sold-out audience for a boxing event at The Armory. The bout ended at 1:43 into the second round.
“Thank you to my fans for coming to the fight. I’m teaching everyone who is number one. I’m ready. I tell everybody, my team, my family…I’m looking forward to next year. For now, I feel happy. Right now, I’m going to go to my house for Christmas and focus on next year,” said Morrell in media reports
In the second round, Morrell went all out, hitting Agbeko with strong uppercuts, lefts, and rights that dropped his head. Seeing that Agbeko was clearly injured, the referee had to step in and stop the massacre. The halt occurred at 1:43 in the second round.
Retreating to the corner and searching for chances to counter Morrell was a mistake made by Agbeko a 31-year-old Ghanaian native. He was not successful with it since Morrell kept hitting lefts and rights.
Morrell’s success might have given David Benavidez and his father, Jose Benavidez Sr., worry. If Benavidez had any questions about the necessity to avoid Morrell, he received confirmation tonight that doing so is necessary if he hopes to keep his plans to face Canelo Alvarez, the undefeated super middleweight champion, in September of next year.
“Everybody came out for my fight and it’s still very exciting. This is the first time my dad and my mom came to watch me fight, so it’s really special to have them here. It’s my night. It’s my time. It’s my year, and I’m looking forward to a good 2024,” said Morell.
“In 2024, I want to fight Benavidez. One-hundred percent,” he added.
