Crystal Palace Under-23s transfer round-up as six more players leave the club in January

The January transfer window has been a relatively quiet one for Patrick Vieria's first team at Crystal Palace, but for Paddy McCarthy's Under-23s it's been a month full of change.

The young Eagles, who compete in Premier League 2 Division One, announced the departures of nine players during January, with some leaving for loan experience down the football pyramid while others moved on permanently.

Jake O'Brien (Swindon Town) and James Taylor (Tonbridge Angels) kicked the month off as they were both sent out on loan, while Jay-Rich Baghuelou's transfer to League One side Accrington Stanley for an undisclosed fee was the first permanent exit of the month.

Palace then announced six departures in six days to close out the January window, starting with goalkeeper Ollie Webber moving to Portsmouth on a permanent deal.

The shot-stopper was an important member of the under-23s side that gained promotion to Premier League 2 but has been unable to displace Joe Whitworth this season between the sticks.

Midfielder Luke Dreher was then sent to Bromley on loan for the remainder of the season. The 23-year-old made his senior Crystal Palace debut against Bournemouth at the end of the 2019/20 season and signed a recent contract extension with the club last summer.

Commenting on his move to National League Bromley, Dreher said: “I’m delighted to have this chance to play competitive football and get back onto the pitch again. I’ve worked hard over the last few seasons and am determined to develop further through this opportunity.”

Dreher's move was followed swiftly by Rob Street joining Newport County on loan. The 20-year-old striker and Scotland Under-21 international scored six goals in 14 games for McCarthy's side this season and made his debut for the Exiles as a substitute in last Saturday's 2-1 win over Barrow.

Street is rated highly by Palace and featured for Vieira's first team during pre-season before being named on the bench for Premier League games against Chelsea and West Ham early in the season.

Palace's final permanent departure of January saw Jack Roles leave the club after making six appearances for the under-23s. The midfielder joined the club last summer after being released by Tottenham's academy but has now moved on once more.

The last two moves, announced together on deadline day, saw Dylan Thiselton and Danny Imray join Farnborough and Chelmsford City respectively on loan.

Thiselton, 19, played regularly in the under-18s last season and joins a Farnborough side currently top of the Southern Premier League South in step three of the non-league pyramid.

“I’m excited to get some experience of senior football under my belt at Farnborough," he told the Palace website.

"I’d like to thank the coaches at Crystal Palace for preparing me for this opportunity, and I look forward to getting started and learning as much as possible.”

Imray, meanwhile, will head back to National League South side Chelmsford City where he was playing prior to getting his move to Palace in 2021.

“I developed and learned a lot during my time with Chelmsford, and look forward to the chance to continue that progression in the men’s game in an environment I know," he said.

"I have developed significantly while at Palace and can now apply that to competitive minutes on the pitch.”

One player that didn't move on from the club in January was starlet Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. The winger is one of the most treasured prospects in the academy and was at one point during the window being tipped for loans to the Championship, League One and even the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.

Instead, no deal happened for the 19-year-old, which might be a sign that Rak-Sakyi could be pushing for a place in Vieira's first team during the second half of the season.

He made his senior debut in Vieira's first Premier League game in charge of the club against Chelsea and has regularly been called into training with the first team over the course of the current season.
