Crystal Palace have secured the services of United States men's international goalkeeper Matt Turner on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest, as confirmed by both clubs on Friday. The agreement, as per sources, does not include an option or obligation for a permanent transfer.
Turner, aged 30, will be joining Palace with the aim of challenging Dean Henderson for the starting goalkeeper position. His arrival coincided with Sam Johnstone's departure to Wolves for a transfer fee that could potentially reach £10 million.
In his statement following the move, Turner expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'I'm really excited to be here -- and I'm ready to get to work.' He also mentioned his eagerness to work with the goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely, as well as learn from and support his new teammates Henderson and Remi Matthews.
Earlier in the transfer window, Turner was linked with a move away from Nottingham Forest, but the club was initially hesitant to let him go. However, with the deadline looming, Crystal Palace made a late move to secure his services.
During his time at Forest, Turner faced competition from Carlos Miguel and Matz Sels, ultimately finding himself as the third-choice goalkeeper. Sels started in Premier League matches, while Miguel featured in midweek League Cup fixtures.
Turner made 17 Premier League appearances for Forest in the previous season and will now look to revitalize his career at Selhurst Park. With 44 caps for the USMNT, he served as the team's primary goalkeeper in both the Qatar World Cup and the recent Copa América tournament.
